ISTE12 Housing Alternatives

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 08-10-2011

In about a month the reservation system for hotels for ISTE12 will open. If it goes like last year rooms will disappear quickly. Before you rush to book a room I’d urge you to consider some other alternatives that perhaps you have never even though about. I’m sure the hotels are gorgeous, but I don’t like to be spread out all over town from my friends.

This year 14 of my friends and I are renting the house in the pictured above. Instead of only spending a few days in San Diego we will be spending the entire week together and it is only costing each of us a shade over $400. Even though I have never been to San Diego I was able to use sites like VRBO and VacationRentals.com to help me find a home that was large enough for my group. Since I’m not familiar with San Diego it took a lot of work to locate homes that were in neighborhoods that were in close proximity to the convention center.

If you don’t have a large group then renting a condo might be an option as well. During my search for the perfect house I came across dozens of condos located within blocks of the convention center. Many of them are around $100-130 per night, but sleep up to 4 people.

Another great option if you are looking for something different that a hotel is a bed and breakfast. There are quite a few in the neighborhood near the convention center, but the three that stood out to me were the Little Italy Inn (great prices), Keating House (gorgeous property),and Hillcrest House (nice little extras).

While it takes a some work to stay some place other than a hotel it is so worth it. I cannot wait to relax in that gorgeous pool and roast marshmallow in the fire pit with my friends. So what are you waiting for? Find a few friends and find a great place to stay before it is too late.

    Hi Beth,
Great ideas. Hope that people from other areas realize that San Diego (and most of Southern California) has a limited public transportation system. Anyone looking for housing beyond walking distance from the Convention Center should study the bus and trolley maps and timetables carefully – or will need a car or take taxis.

Good point. The fact a trolley was just a few blocks away was what closed the deal for the house we selected.
